My Hometown | Traverse City, Michigan

Have you ever noticed how so many of us don’t take (or have) the time to be tourists in our own hometown? I’m fortunate to have moved to a new hometown a year ago that is a lively tourist area. There is something new to explore every day. Walks or bike rides down beautiful nature trails lead to fields of flowers, interesting wildlife, or fantastic views from the top of huge sand dunes at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.

The Crystal River

Sandhill Crane

Sometimes a hike up what seems to be a long trail going nowhere will come out to an incredible view.

Loving our new hammocks. They’re so lightweight you can take them anywhere!

Sleeping Bear Dunes

Making your way to the bottom of these giant sand dunes is easy, coming back up is the tough part!

View of Lake Michigan from the top of the dunes

The fresh water beaches are perfect for hanging out, paddle boarding, sailing, swimming or kayaking.

Lake Michigan

North Bar Lake

Empire Beach

Rainy, misty days at Empire Beach are uniquely beautiful.

The open space near West Bay, and right in the heart of Traverse City has everything you could want for summertime fun.

You can rent kayaks, bikes, Stand up Paddle Boards.

Water Park Fun!

Bikes and hammocks are a common site everywhere.

Everyone loves their pets!

Take a cruise in West Bay on your own or with groups of others on the Tall Ship Manitou or join the party on the Nauti-Cat.

Kids get to join in on the Tall Ship Manitou.

Just across the street on Wednesday & Saturday mornings you can pick up some fresh, organic fruits and vegetables at the Farmer’s Market.

Enjoy nature right in the middle of town with a walk along Boardman River.

If you’re in the mood to shop, check out the boutiques and specialty shops in the vibrant downtown area, a short walk from West Bay. Be sure to pick up a bag of gourmet popcorn from Pop-Kie’s. Try the Front Street Blend of Cheddar & Caramel – Yum!

For a unique movie experience, check out the nostalgic charm of the State Theatre.

Keep going a few more blocks to The Little Fleet food trucks at 448 E Front St. It’s a fun place to grab a picnic table and enjoy some delicious food. A couple of personal favorites are the fish tacos from Roaming Harvest or the chopped salad from EZ Cheesy.

I’ve decided to spend this summer being a “tourist” in my own hometown. This is just a broad overview, and with so many directions to choose from, I hardly know where to start. It’s going to be a busy summer checking out my new hometown!

Please share your favorite place in Traverse City, or your own hometown!
